How does sublimation printing work?
Sublimation Printing is the process where special sublimation ink is printed onto sublimation transfer paper via a specialized printer. This enables detailed, colorful designs to be deeply applied to almost any kind of surface, from t-shirts to mugs.
Unlike traditional inkjet printers, the sublimation ink becomes an integrated part of the the substrate (material) being printed upon (whereas inkjet printers simply apply the ink to the surface of the item.) The sublimation ink is heat pressed to the substrate to the point where the ink transforms into a gaseous state. The heat also opens up the pores of the material receiving the sublimation (polymer, polyester, etc), allowing the gas to to permeate the material.
The sublimation ink is then allowed to cool, which coalesces the ink back into a solid while still permeating the pores of the material - permanently capturing your design into your newly-personalized item!
One major advantage to the sublimation printing process: as long as your substrate (item) isn't damaged, your image won't fade or deteriorate! It will remain as colorful and vibrant as the day it was printed.
